When to start generating interest

So this is a question for anyone. At what stage of development, would you think it’s best to start generating interest? I know too early and people will be disappointed, because they will wait too long. Too late and it won’t generate any traction for release. 

Maybe a list of what to have done before so.

Webby
Major gameplay
Company logo
etc

Note: I’m not ready to do so yet, but I’m interested in what others think about this.

I’d say when you’re sure you’re going to finish the project, and when you’re able to give a release date.

I always find that the best time to advertise is when your game reaches beta/feature lock or just before it goes gold.

Start generating interest in your game as soon as you have something to show or when you have a playable game (it doesn’t have to be completed).
