Machine gun – Handling single shot / full auto

I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle this in the smoothest possible way to handle animation and sound.

Single shot, easy -> play single shot sound and animation.
Full auto becomes trickier. For responsiveness I want to shoot instantly, so that’s going to be a single shot animation and sound, but once I’ve detected the button is held how do I transition? Or do I simple repeat single shot over and over?
