Hi everyone, I am interested in creating a custom polygonal map generator, but I have very little experience with random generation of any kind. I’m looking to make maps where the base map itself looks something like the base map in this picture: Can anyone give me some help on where to start?

You should do some research into mesh anatomy, there should be some great documentation on unity’s website if that’s what you’re using.

Alternatively you could find some tutorial series on youtube, quill18creates has some good ones.

I found this site a few days ago, lots of procedural generation tutorials! I’ve only done one of them so far but seems pretty legit.

This is an excellent resource for developers of ALL stages. Thank you for sharing this, especially since there is quite a bit on procedural generation.

For anybody curious: I’ve made a bit of progress, thanks to the SUPER helpful website posted by JimGiant! I’ve utilized some of the code in Catlike Coding’s procedural generation tutorial (http://catlikecoding.com/unity/tutorials/procedural-grid/) and then I’ve multiplied each individual vertex’s Z value by a random number between -0.2 and 0.2 using the Random.Range() function. It has worked exactly as I’d hoped and the system I’m using is highly customizable as well.

Awesome! I’m glad to hear that worked well for you. I too went through that tutorial about a week ago and, I have to say, I learned a lot!

Glad to hear it’s worked out.
