Dialogue triggered upon game event

Hi all.

I know the Brackeys Youtube dialogue tutorial discusses initiating dialogue with a button, but I want to initiate dialogue with game events (player collects an item, player reaches certain distance from an NPC, etc.). How would I go about this? I am a beginner in Unity but have some basic coding experience.
