Alot of famous RTS games use 2d tilemaps ( instantiating many tiles during run time ) when a simple plane can do the same thing. I am wondering what are the advantages of using 2d tiles over a plane?
The first thing that comes to mind, is procedurally generated worlds/levels based on tilemaps.
But the overall purpose I think is efficiency AND consistency with the art style.
